The Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) was founded in 1936 and is currently one of the leading higher education institutions in Mexico and the main institution of technological education in the country. Our mission is to train research and innovative professionals who contribute to the social, humanistic, sustainable, economic and technological development of Mexico and the world. To achieve this, we promote close collaboration with other higher education institutions, government agencies and companies, always guided by our institutional values and principles.
Today, it has an educational infrastructure of 93 academic units located in 38 municipalities of 24 states in Mexico, covering 75% of the country’s states.
In addition, it serves three educational levels: high school, undergraduate and postgraduate, achieving a total enrollment of more than 213,000 students in 293 academic programs in face-to-face, non-face-to-face and mixed modalities. It has more than 15,000 teachers and researchers, of whom 1,666 are members of the National System of Researchers (SNI) of the National Council for Science and Technology (CONAHCYT), the governing body of science in Mexico.
Its educational programs and research lines are mainly located in three areas of knowledge: Engineering and physical-mathematical sciences, Biomedical sciences and Social and administrative sciences. Engineering is the most outstanding area in terms of scientific production and international positioning. For example, Petroleum Engineering ranks #51-100 in the QS WUR Ranking by Subject 2025. Likewise, the Institute also promotes interdisciplinary and collaborative work as one of the best ways to contribute to the solution of the problems that afflict society and the natural environment.
The Institute is also distinguished by its different recreational options such as art workshops, exhibitions, concerts and sports facilities, thus promoting a complete and rewarding educational experience for students, both inside and outside the classroom.
