Universitas Indonesia is a modern, comprehensive, open, multi-cultural, and humanist campus that covers a wide range of disciplines. Established in 1849, UI is the oldest university in Indonesia, with the main campus in Depok, West Java, and Jakarta. Depok’s main campus is hosted almost all seventeen faculties and Vocational program, except for Faculty of Medicine and two Graduate Schools that is based in Jakarta.
The community of UI – that covers the world – includes more than 36,000 students, 4700 academic staff, and 400,000 alumni. Among its alumni, UI has graduated many of the Nation’s top academics, policy makers, prominent NGO activists, Start-up company leaders, CEO of State-Owned Enterprise, CEO of multinational and private companies, as well as leader of international organizations. The University offers Indonesia’s broadest range of disciplines with its research focuses on finding solutions to society’s biggest challenges and problems.
In 2007, the university underwent substantial development of its main facilities by building one of the largest libraries in Southeast Asia that have over 20,000 visitors per day and have vast collection with approximately around 1.5 million books as well as academic journals. The Crystal of Knowledge library, designed with sustainability concept, powers itself with environmental friendly solar energy. The university’s main campus in Depok was built during the mid-1980s when the university underwent substantial modernization program. With just 25 percent of the 320 hectares is used for academic, research, and student activities, while 75 percent is used to maintain the surrounding forest. The urban forest covers an area of 90 hectares consisting of many valuable tree species. There are also six large lakes whose acronyms for each name form the word KAMPUS, namely K(enanga), A(ghatis), M(ahoni), P(uspa), U(lin), S(alam).
In addition to the library and the six lakes that characterize the university, there are other International class facilities at UI, namely the Felfest or Felicity Festival UI, UI Sports Facilities (SOR), UI Gymnasium, and Stadium, Student Activity Center (Pusgiwa), and Integrated Creative Engineering Learning Laboratory (i-CELL) in the Faculty of Engineering UI.
By changing and adapting from conventional learning to online learning, UI leading a various breakthrough in the Industry as well as employer partnership. During the pandemic as part of Ministry of Education, Research and Technology’s Program known as Merdeka Belajar/ Kampus Merdeka – MBKM (Independent Learning/ Independent Campus), known as MBKM program, with emphasize on student-centered learning as well stronger partnership with the industry. The MBKM program provides challenges and opportunities for developing innovation, creativity, capacity, personality both for UI’s faculty and students. By 2022, UI have undergone substantial partnership with various industries to support and facilitate many leading innovations, inventions, and ideas for the needs of both the industry and society at large. This was evident in 2022, that UI have obtained 267 patents.
These achievements are further reinforced by the institutional success of UI as the best universities in Indonesia and even in Southeast Asia according to various leading university world rankings and the latest national ranking.
In the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Ranking (QS WUR) 2023, UI has increased its ranking significantly, from rank 290 in 2022 to rank 248. This is the highest ranking that UI has achieved in the last one decade, positioned itself as one top three universities in Indonesia.
In addition, within the QS WUR by Subject 2022, UI has achieved respectable result as the best comprehensive university in Indonesia. UI is the best university in Indonesia in three broad subject areas and 12 fields. Even the three disciplines achieve admirable result in Southeast Asia region. These three disciplines are Arts and Humanities (5th Southeast Asia), Life Sciences and Medicine (9th Southeast Asia), and Social Sciences and Management (5th Southeast Asia).
Notable achievement in its ranking data management by UI was announced during 2022 QS EduData Summit (EDS) in New York. In QS EDS Summit 2022, it was announced that UI received an award from QS in the category of Recognition for Engagement. As the only University from Indonesia who received QS award from all categories, UI was awarded for its commitment in the engagement and data provision.
Universitas Indonesia is also deeply committed in its contribution for achieving the United Nations (UN)’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) through its activities and program in research, teaching and community development. As evidence in the latest Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022, UI continued to excel achieving its highest ranking ever by entering the top twenty in the world, which positioned UI as top three in Southeast Asia and number one in Indonesia.
Even further, UI also commits for sustainable principle in supporting UN’s SDGS by both creating culture and policy of sustainability internally. As shown in UI Greenmetric World Ranking UI has managed to increase its ranking from 27th to 24th from last year positioned UI not only as the national best but also as the best in East Asia. The ranking is based on major sustainability policy indicators: Setting & Infrastructure, Energy & Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education & Research.
Not only UI excels in international ranking but able to accomplish as the best performed University in Indonesia. Based on the eight performance indicator (Indikator Kinerja Utama – IKU) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), UI increased its ranking significantly from number eight in 2020 to number one in 2021. The total score increased to 75, and the growth score increased by 515.
